The International Seminar "Had there been someone to teach me... Practices, voices, pathways facing inequalities in Education" took place last November 8th, at the Institute of Education of the University of Minho, aimed to present and discuss of the research outcomes of project EDUPLACES.

 

The event was attended by two of the project's three international consultants, Prof. Danny Wildemeersch (U. Leuven, Belgium) and Prof. Sally Power (U. Cardiff, United Kingdom), who commented on the findings presented by researcher Fátima Antunes (project coordinator) and, at the end of the day, also participated in the Doctoral Conference titled "Education, Democracy and Social justice: cand education and school make a difference?".

 

The two communications panels were attended by researchers Joana Lúcio, Tiago Neves, Virgínio Sá and Rosanna Barros. Researcher José A. Palhares moderated the first panel. In each of the panels, two researchers external to the project and the University of Minho also participated: Helena Araújo (CIIE/FPCEUP) and Natália Alves (IE-ULisboa). The second panel was moderated and commented by journalist Inês Cardoso (Jornal de Notícias).

 

There was also the launch of the book presenting and discussing the outcomes of project EDUPLACES, "Rowing against inequalities in education - Practices, voices, pathways" (2019, ed. Húmus).

During the Seminar, the dataRepositoriUM platform was also presented, through which the EDUPLACES project will make research data available on open access, for other teams/researchers to work on.

Project EDUPLACES was represented at the 1st International Conference on Educational Research (I Conferencia Internacional de Investigación en Educación - iRED'19), whose theme was "Education 2019: challenges, trends, commitments". The event took place at the University of Barcelona (Spain), on November 4th-5th 2019.

Researcher Manuel A. Silva was in charge of presenting the paper (co-authored by researcher Carlos A. Gomes) titled "EDUPLACES and the search for an inclusive school: a political and sociological reflection in the framework of a research project", in the context of a thematic session on "Equity, well-being and inclusion". A restricted set of papers from those presented at this conference (including the paper proposed by the EDUPLACES researchers) will be published shortly.

On November 8th, at the Institute of Education of the University of Minho, the International Seminar to debate project EDUPLACES' research outcomes will take place. This is a joint initiative of project EDUPLACES, CIEd - Research Centre on Education (IE/UM), the Department of Social Sciences of Education (IE/UM) and the Doctoral Degree in Educational Sciences (IE/UM).
 

This event, titled "Had there been someone to teach me... Practices, voices, pathways facing inequalities in Education", will include the participation of the EDUPLACES research team, the project's consultants (Danny Wildemeersch - U. Leuven; Francesca Salvà Mut - U. Balearic Islands; Sally Power - U. Cardiff) and researchers responsible for previous research projects in the field of inclusive education (Helena C. Araújo - U. Porto; Natália Alves - U. Lisboa).
 

Moderation and comments will be done by journalists Ana Cristina Pereira (Público) and Inês Cardoso (Jornal de Notícias).
 

Licínio Lima (U. Minho) and Ariana Cosme (U. Porto) will present the book titled "Rowing against inequalities in education - Practices, voices, pathways", which compiles the outcomes of project EDUPLACES.

The project's consultants will also participate in a roundtable, titled "Education, Democracy and Social justice: cand education and school make a difference?" (which will simultaneously be a Doctoral Conference within IE/UM's Doctoral Degree in Educational Sciences).

Registration is free, but mandatory, and should take place by November 1st via eduplaces-cied@ie.uminho.pt

On 09/07/2019, project EDUPLACES was presented at the National Science Summit 2019. This annual event is promoted by the National Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) in collaboration with Ciência Viva - National Agency for Scientific and Technological Culture and the Parliamentary Commission for Education and Science, with the institutional support of the Goverment through the Minister for Science, Technology and Higher Education. Team EDUPLACES participated in this event by invitation of the Director of CIEd - Research Centre in Education of the University of Minho. The paper, titled "Vozes sobre práticas de educação inclusiva: Perspetivas multi-ator sobre a superação do insucesso e abandono escolares" [Voices about inclusive education practices: Multi-actor perspectives about overcoming school failure and dropout], was presented within session "Quality Education - ODS.4", by researcher Joana Lúcio.

 

On July 11th-13th, the EDUPLACES Summer School, "ROWING AGAINST INEQUALITIES IN EDUCATION: PRACTICES, VOICES, PATHWAYS", took place at the Institute of Education of the University of Minho, a joint initiative of the EDUPLACES project and the Department of Social Sciences of Education of IE/UM. About 30 professionals from areas related to Education signed up to participate in this training initiative, which was also an opportunity to disseminate the results of project EDUPLACES. Researchers Carlos A. Gomes (coordinator of the teaching staff), Manuel A. Silva, Joana Lúcio, Raquel R. Monteiro, José A. Palhares, Almerindo Afonso, Emília Vilarinho, Armando Loureiro and Rosanna Barros facilitated the several workshops. On the final day, a "circle of knowledge" session took place, in which the Summer School's participants presented some notes about the various workshops. Next, researcher Tiago Neves moderated a roundtable in which representatives of the practices under study participated.

A new issue (vol. 9, no. 2) of the Multidisciplinary Journal of Educational Research (known by its Spanish acronym, REMIE) was recently published, featuring a paper by researchers Fátima Antunes and Joana Lúcio. The paper, titled "Overcoming Barriers: The Local and the Innovative Dimensions of Inclusive Socio-Educational Practices", includes data stemming from the cross analysis of the practices under study in EDUPLACES, and is available on open access. The journal is indexed in (among others) Scopus, Web of Science and Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI).

Representing project EDUPLACES, researcher Joana Lúcio participated in the VIII Multidisciplinary International Conference on Educational Research (CIMIE 2019). The theme for this year's conference was "Education: The door to all social improvement", and it took place at the University of Lleida (Spain) on July 4th-5th. Joana Lúcio presented a paper (co-authored by reseacher Fátima Antunes) titled "Multi-actor perspectives on successful and inclusive socio-educational practices: Overcoming school failure and dropout in Portugal", which was featured within a session pertaining to the "Inclusive Education" theme. This paper will be published in the conference's proceedings, available before the end of 2019. At the organising committee's invitation, Joana Lúcio participated in a panel (roundtable) framed by the "School, Family and Community" theme, which was titled "The dreamed transformation - Inclusion of the community for social improvement", and in which a researcher from the Rovira i Virgili University (Tarragona, Spain) and a researcher from the University of Barcelona (Spain) also participated. Joana Lúcio's contribution focused on the Atypical Academic Pathways under study in EDUPLACES ("The voices of young people about interrupting school failure and dropout: The role of schools, families and communities in Atypical Educational Pathways").

From July 11th to 13th, the EDUPLACES Summer School will take place, a joint initiative of the EDUPLACES project and the Department of Social Sciences of Education of the Institute of Education of the University of Minho. Its title is "ROWING AGAINST INEQUALITIES IN EDUCATION: PRACTICES, VOICES, PATHWAYS" [Remar contra as desigualdades em Educação: Práticas, vozes, percursos].

This Summer School is aimed at school administrators/directive staff, teachers and other professionals in the educational field, social workers, local government staff, parents/parents' associations, VETs and VET managers, etc.

A roundtable with the participation of representatives of the practices under study will take place on the last day of the EDUPLACES Summer School (July 13th), in the morning.

Registration is open until July 4th. More information can be obtained with the Department of Social Sciences of Education's secretariat (calexandra@ie.uminho.pt).

A special issue of the Portuguese Journal of Education (Revista Portuguesa de Educação) was recently published to mark its 30th anniversary.


Among others, this special issue features a paper that is the outcome of an interview with Prof. Sally Power on the occasion of her visit to the University of Minho and participation in the 2nd EDUPLACES Research Seminar (June 2018). The paper, authored by Almerindo J. Afonso, Armando Loureiro and Joana Lúcio, is titled "Inequalities and (in)justices in education: a dialogue with Sally Power" and is available on open access.

The Portuguese Journal of Education (PJE) is one of the oldest scientific periodicals on Education in Portugal. During this period it has become an international reference journal due to the relevance and quality of its texts. The PJE is an open forum for the dissemination of educational knowledge, giving voice to the plurality of the agents that carry out research and work in the educational field. Submitted papers are subjected to a double-blind peer-review process. PJE provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge.

Team EDUPLACES was widely represented at the XIV Congresso da Sociedade Portuguesa de Ciências da Educação, which took place at the Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences of the University of Coimbra, on 11th-13th October 2018.

Five papers were presented as part of a panel devoted exclusively to the project, which took place in the afternoon of the first day of the Congress. Three of the presentations (those wherein CIEd/UM researchers participated) were submitted to RepositoriUM, where they can be freely accessed. Search by author allows access to previously presented papers.

Researchers Armando Loureiro, Marta Rodrigues and Joana Lúcio participated in the European Conference on Educational Research (ECER 2018), in Bolzano (Italy), where two papers pertaining to project EDUPLACES were presented (see News from 10/04/2018). This participation strengthened not only the project's dissemination, but also its internationalization. The paper titled "Preventing School Underachievement Through Ability Grouping Practices In Schools: Perspectives From Programme Local Coordinators, Teachers And Social Workers" was presented within Network 5 - Children and Youth at risk and Urban Education. The paper titled "Community Participation And Innovation For Overcoming School Failure And Dropout: The Voices Of Professionals Engaged In Inclusive Socio-educational Practices" was presented within Network 14 - Communities, families and schooling in Educational Research, with which researcher Joana Lúcio has been collaborating since 2010.

The 2nd EDUPLACES Research Seminar took place at the Institute of Education of the University of Minho, on 27/06/2018. The work session was found to be very productive, and culminated with the conference by Prof. Sally Power, a consultant for the project, with a great attendance.

On 02/07/2018, project EDUPLACES was presented at the National Science Summit 2018. EDUPLACES' second Research Seminar will take place on 27/06/2018. Prof. Sally Power (University of Cardiff, United Kingdom), who is a Consultant for the project, will participate in the Seminar.
Following the Seminar, Prof. Power will present a conference, titled "Understanding the complexity of educational injustices". This event is co-organized by EDUPLACES/CIEd, the Direction of the Doctoral Degree in Educational Sciences and the Department of Social Sciences of Education of the Institute of Education of the University of Minho. Therefore, this will also be the 2nd Doctoral Conference within the Doctoral Degree in Educational Sciences.
The conference will take place at the Amphitheater of the Institute of Education of the University of Minho, at 17:30H.

The EDUPLACES team recently had another papel proposal accepted for presentation at an international scientific event: researchers Isabel Costa, Armando Loureiro and Virgínio Sá will present a paper titled "Overcoming school underachievement: a view on strategies of 'student grouping'" at the final conference for the RESL.eu project (Reducing Early School Leaving in Europe), to take place at the University of Antwerp (Belgium), on 22nd-24th January 2018.

On 13/07/2017, a paper in the scope of project EDUPLACES was presented at the II Conferencia Ibérica de Sociología de la Educación, which took place at the University of Córdoba (Spain). This paper, co-authored by researchers Virgínio Sá and Esmeraldina Veloso, was later submitted for publication on the conference's proceedings, and is also under appreciation for potential publication within the Revista de la Asociación de Sociología de la Educación (RASE).

The paper presented by researchers Joana Lúcio and Fátima Antunes at the 6th Multidisciplinary International Congress of Educational Research (University of Deusto, Bilbao, Spain) last June was also recently accepted for publication within the conference's digital proceedings (scheduled for the end of 2017).

EDUPLACES' first Research Seminar took place at the Institute of Education of the University of Minho (Portugal), on 07/07/2017.

Aside from the project's research team, the Seminar was also attended by Prof. Francesca Salvá Mut (University of the Balearic Islands, Spain), consultant for EDUPLACES. 

 

In this Seminar, the outcomes of the first year of research were presented and discussed. There was also an opportunity to debate and consolidate the methodological framework that will support the project's next phase (Multi-actor perspectives on inclusive socioeducational practices), to be completed by May 2018.

EDUPLACES' first Research Workshop took place at the Institute of Education of the University of Minho (Portugal), and was attended by the whole team.

Following completion of the first milestone (development of a panel of inclusive practices), the outcomes of the first phase were discussed, in order to establish the Portfolio of Inclusive Practices (second milestone).
